Configuring the WordPress Auto Update Feature

Default auto update configuration

As of 3.7 WordPress included an new auto update feature, the default configuration is to auto updates for minor or security releases (ie  from 3.7 to 3.71).

Note: You will still have to update manually for major releases (ie 3.71 to 3.8).

 

To enable auto updates for major release updates

Add to wp-config.php:

define(‘WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE’, true);

 

To enable auto updates for plugins

Add this filter below to wp-config.php:

add_filter( ‘auto_update_plugin’, ‘__return_true’ );

 

To enable auto updates for themes

Add this filter to the wp-config.php:

add_filter( ‘auto_update_theme’, ‘__return_true’ );

Note: Only works for themes downloaded from the official WordPress repository. 

 

To disable core auto updates but enable plugins and themes auto updates

Add to wp-config.php:

define( ‘WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE’, false );
add_filter( ‘auto_update_plugin’, ‘__return_true’ );
add_filter( ‘auto_update_theme’, ‘__return_true’ );

 

To disable all WordPress auto updates (core, plugin and theme)

Add to wp-config.php:

define( ‘AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED’, true );
